Allergy Medication

There are numerous types of allergy medications such as antihistamines and decongestants that are available when you can’t seem to avoid allergies. These medications can reduce symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes. Inflammation of the nose can be treated with nasal corticosteroids.

Our allergists will work with patients to determine the best allergy medication option. We will guide patients on how often and how much medication to take.

Asthma Medication

There are many effective medicines for asthma treatment. There are two main types of asthma medications. Quick relief medicines are take at the first sign of asthma symptoms for immediate relief and long term control medicines are taken everyday to prevent symptoms.

1.Quick relief medicines:

  • Short acting inhaled beta2-agonists
  • Anticholinergics

This type of treatment is recommended before exercise. Quick relief medicines do not control airway inflammation which causes the symptoms.

2. Long term control medicines:

  • Antileukotrienes or leukotriene modifiers
  • Cromolyn sodium and nedocromil
  • Inhaled corticosteroids
  • Long-acting inhaled beta2-agonists (never taken alone)
  • Methylxanthines
  • Oral corticosteroids
  • Immunomodulators

These medications are taken every day and reduce airway inflammation and allow more asthma control.
