Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children and affects approximately 34 million Americans. Asthma is a common lung disorder that causes inflammation and muscle spasm of the small airways in the lungs. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and/or shortness of breath. It may develop at any age, but is commonly present during childhood. With the right treatment, children with asthma improve over time. Adults with asthma can receive treatment as well, however, it is less likely to be outgrown. With the right asthma doctor who can incorporate the right strategies and treatment, asthma can be well controlled.

Symptoms

Common asthma symptoms include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest tightness
  • Wheezing
  • Coughing

Triggers

Asthmatics may have one or more of the following triggers:

  • Exercise
  • Respiratory Infections
  • Environmental allergens
  • Emotional stress (laughing and crying)
  • Cold air & humid air
  • Sinusitis
  • Acid reflux
  • Fluctuations in hormone levels (pregnancy or menses)
  • Irritants (smoke, perfumes/colognes, cleaning solvents)
  • Obstructive sleep apnea

Diagnosis

Asthma is suspected when the characteristic symptoms occur during exercise, colds, or allergic reactions. A favorable response to asthma medicines is suggestive of the diagnosis as well. Diagnosis and treatment of patients require periodic exams and lung function measurements starting by age 5 or 6. Spirometry is used to measure the amount and rate of air flow from the lungs. Other diagnostic tests are methacholine challenge, measurement of exhaled nitric oxide, skin tests, chest x-rays, and blood work. If symptoms are suspected then testing and treatment is needed from professional allergists to get the best outcome.

Treatment

  1. Avoid allergens and irritants – Take measures to reduce exposure to the substance causing allergic reactions. This will reduce medication intake.
  2. Treatment of underlying medical conditions – Chronic sinus problems or acid reflux may aggravate asthma. These issues must be addressed to have the best control over your asthma. Be sure to get your yearly vaccinations because viral infections are triggers for asthma.
  3. Medications – There are quick relief and long term control medications. Utilize both in order to fully control your symptoms.
  4. Allergy Immunotherapy Injections – Allergy injections are the most effective preventative strategy that will provide long term treatment for allergies. These will help build immunity to the allergens.
