Food Allergy
A food allergy refers to the production of specific allergic antibodies (call IgE) to a specific food such as peanut, soy, wheat, milk, egg, fish or shellfish. Symptoms associated with a food allergy include one or more of the following symptoms: hives, angioedema, wheezing, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness and in extreme cases loss of consciousness. Anaphylaxis is when multiple organ systems in the body are involved and if not recognized and treated immediately can lead to death in patients who unknowingly ingest a food they are very sensitive to. Food allergies are more common in children with a prevalence of 5-8% and are less common in adults with a prevalence of 1-3%. Food intolerances can cause similar symptoms and be mistaken for a food allergy. The Bernstein Allergy Group doctors have extensive experience evaluating, diagnosing and treating food allergy. They use a combination of specialized skin and blood testing in conjunction with food challenges to determine the most appropriate management and treatment of your suspected food reaction.
