Immunotherapy (Allergy Shots)
For patients not responding to allergy medications and those experiencing continuous nasal allergy symptoms for months at a time, "allergy shots" or allergen immunotherapy injections may be the answer. This treatment involves a series of injections under the skin (subcutaneous). Patients are immunized with steadily increasing doses of therapeutic allergen solutions given once or twice weekly during a 5 to 6 months build-up phase. Once the buildup phase is completed, the patient receives a high maintenance dose of the immunizing allergens for 3 to 5 years every 2 to 4 weeks. The overall goal of allergen immunotherapy is to cause treated patients to become tolerant to the very airborne allergens that makes them miserable during the allergy seasons. Medical studies have proven that allergy injections reduce nasal allergic symptoms and reduce the need for allergy medications during pollen seasons. Other medical studies have shown that the majority of patients can go off allergen injections after 3 to 5 years and do quite well for many years thereafter.
